CANVAS TRANSITION

Canvas will soon replace Blackboard as Howard University’s official Learning Management System (LMS)

This transition aligns with the Howard Forward Strategic Plan, Pillar 1, Enhance Academic Excellence; specifically supporting the initiatives, Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Student Success and Academic Innovation. This transition supports the expansion of our comprehensive Digital Learning Infrastructure (DLI). Sustaining a comprehensive DLI assists with the implementation of Workday Student and also the growth of online programs and course offerings across all modalities.

The transition to Canvas is supported by the Office of Digital and Online Learning, the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Assessment (CETLA), and Enterprise Technology Services (ETS).

Canvas will become Howard University’s official LMS beginning January 2, 2023

Canvas Benefits

  • An intuitive, easy to learn interface, including an improved mobile app experience (access reviews)
  • 24‐7 phone/live chat support with Canvas, along with improved instructions, videos, and guides
  • Enhanced and easy to manage syllabus, course calendar, and course schedule
  • Improved workflow for more streamlined grading

In addition, other institutions using Canvas note that it can enhance student learning through features that facilitate interactivity and collaboration, self‐directed learning, and assessment. While we acknowledge that switching platforms may present some challenges, we believe that the benefits to Canvas outweigh the issues that may be encountered during this transition.
