Data Science for Social Justice Week at Howard University provides a forum for scholars across the campus to showcase interdisciplinary, innovative, and influential research in data science from the academia, industry, and government. This year’s celebration will be highlighted with the announcement of the Data.org sponsored Hello, BLACK World curriculum, DuBois, Data & the Black Experience 3D Visualization Exhibit including a focus on financial inclusion and the Mastercard sponsored Inclusive Growth and Racial Equity Thought Leadership Lecture Series which all could transform into meaningful programming and content for educational use.

Day 1: Coded Bias Film Screening

On Tuesday, February 21, we invite the Howard University community to the film screening of Coded Bias in partnership with Howard University Student Association and Graduate Student Association.

CODED BIAS explores the fallout of MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini’s discovery that facial recognition does not see dark-skinned faces accurately, and her journey to push for the first-ever legislation in the U.S. to govern against bias in the algorithms that impact us all.

On Thursday, February 23, the birthday of W.E.B. Du Bois, we launch the Data.org sponsored HELLO BLACK WORLD curriculum, DuBois, Data and the Black Experience 3D Visualization Exhibit

The HELLO BLACK WORLD: Du Bois, Data & the Black experience 3D Visualization Exhibit is an artist representation of Howard University’s interdisciplinary, innovative, and influential approach toward data science and Analytics. With the use of historical 3D data visualization by W.E.B Du Bois combined with current data with commentary by influential scholars, the exhibit will showcase the use of data science to solve real-world problems. Viewers have the opportunity to explore the power of data from diverse fields such as sociology, music, economics, history, journalism, criminology, law, and health, through the eyes of Du Bois. There will be a special focus on representing Black wealth equity, through data visualizations emphasizing historical patterns of Black economic growth, housing and property ownership, youth and adult employment, and access to business opportunities.

Day 4: Data Science Open House

Friday February 24, we invite all interested applicants to a Virtual Open House.

The Howard University MS in Applied Data Science and Analytics program will prepare students for successful careers in a burgeoning and prospering field. With a unique emphasis on Social Justice and the growing importance of understanding data across academic disciplines, this three-semester long program provides students with traditional data science opportunities while also offering specializations in the areas of Minority Health & Health Disparities, Environmental Justice, and Economic Empowerment.
