When you think about the value of moving forward through teamwork, it is clearly demonstrated in the fishermen of Elmina, Ghana. Young and old, working in unison with their varying strengths to pull a net of fish to shore, the fishermen gather at 7 a.m. and work in unison, pulling, singing rhythmically, and resting in between for five hours, adapting themselves to the ebb and flow of the tide until the net is brought to shore at 1 p.m.. The fishermen reveal to us that as we combine our knowledge, strengths, trust, and faith in each other, we find that there's rhythm and power in collaboration and strength in unity.

What is Interprofessional Education?

Interprofessional education (IPE) is defined by the World Health Organization as "when students from two or more professions learn about, from and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes." IPE is a critical approach for preparing students to enter the health workforce, where teamwork and collaboration are important competencies.

Unlike traditional educational approaches where health professions students learn in isolation, IPE involves students from various professions learning together as a team, with their collaborative interaction characterized by the integration and modification of different professions' contributions in light of input from other professions. This approach prepares future healthcare professionals to work effectively in team-based, patient-centered care environments.

The Four Core Competencies

The four IPEC core competencies focus on Interprofessional Teamwork and Team-based Practices, Roles and Responsibilities for Collaborative Practice, Values/Ethics for Interprofessional Practice, and Interprofessional Communication Practices. These competencies were most recently updated in 2023 and are sponsored by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC), developed by an expert panel that included representatives from six different professional education organizations.

1. Values and Ethics for Interprofessional Practice

Students learn to work with individuals from other professions while maintaining respect for the unique values, ethics, and responsibilities of each profession.

2. Roles and Responsibilities for Collaborative Practice

Students develop understanding of their own professional role and those of other healthcare professions to appropriately assess and address patient care needs.

3. Interprofessional Communication Practices

Students learn to communicate with patients, families, communities, and health team members in a responsive, responsible, and professional manner.

4. Interprofessional Teamwork and Team-Based Practice

Students apply relationship-building values and principles of team dynamics to perform effectively in different team roles and improve patient care outcomes.
