MOOC Resources for Faculty

Creating a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) can be a deeply rewarding experience, offering Howard University faculty the opportunity to connect with a global learning community and enhance their pedagogical skills. While the experience is enriching, it also requires careful planning and execution.

The development of a MOOC typically involves three major steps:

1 - Planning a MOOC

This initial stage requires meticulous planning. It is essential to clearly define the course goals, understand the objectives for learners, and apply basic instructional design principles. Rushing into production without sufficient planning often leads to challenges later on. Good planning at this stage will yield long-term benefits for the course.

2 - Producing a MOOC

Once the course plan is firmly established, the focus shifts to creating the actual course content. This includes developing high-quality lecture videos, assessments, transcripts, and readings. Our Office of Academic Innovation Team will provide you with valuable assistance as you build your course.

3 - Deploying a MOOC

The final stage involves launching the MOOC. These courses are designed to be asynchronous, allowing learners the flexibility to engage with the material at their own pace. As learners enroll in and complete items in the course, their feedback is gathered in order to optimize the course. Courses instructors update their courses quarterly based on this feedback to ensure continuous improvement and relevance, fostering a vibrant learning community around the course material.
